August 2007
Dear Patients and Friends,
First of all, I would like to encourage everyone living in northern climates to have their Vitamin D levels tested. Almost all of the clients I have tested so far are seriously deficient, even when they have been supplementing with the usually suggested 400 IU’s per day. This was even at the end of summer, when our bodies are able to manufacture Vitamin D from sunlight. The test is called 25OH-D and optimal levels are 80-100 ng/mL. Emotional problems, immune dysfunction, and osteoporosis can result from low Vitamin D levels. Your primary care Doctor will probably be willing to test you, but will tell you that you are ok if the level is over 30; again, optimal is much higher than that!
I would also like to encourage you to make your annual check in appointment with me. If you are able to schedule your appointment soon, you will be able to take advantage of my current fee schedule based on $135 per hour. On Sept 15, 2007, my professional service fee will increase to $175 per hour. The pro-rated fee will be $45 for 15 minutes, $90 for 30 minutes, and $135 for 45 minutes. The rising cost of everything related to running a business is prompting me to increase my rates. However, if you compare my rates with those of other practitioners using a comprehensive approach, you will find that my rates are still quite reasonable.
I want to write about my approach to treatment. My goal is to optimize your health and to promote wellness in your life. To accomplish this, we must work together. Patients must tell me about their symptoms and life habits and their ability to follow through on their treatment plans. I look at each person as an individual and work up a treatment plan that is designed to meet that person’s needs.
My approach to treatment does follow a plan that applies to each person in varying degrees. The first step in supporting your body is through optimizing your digestive system. We want to make sure that your body is able to take in and utilize the nutrients you are feeding it. Next we want to support your adrenal, thyroid and sex hormone functioning. When these systems are out of balance, many negative symptoms can result or be worsened. Once we have these systems in better balance, we can begin the process of detoxification to remove the pesticides and heavy metals from your body. This allows your neurological and immune systems to function normally. After the immune functioning has improved, we can support it in driving out latent viral, bacterial, and/or fungal organisms that may be causing problems. This approach is designed to optimize your health and to steer you along a healthier aging pathway in spite of genetic and environmental influences towards disease.
I wanted to share some of my patients’ success stories. It is stories like these that bring me satisfaction and fulfillment in my professional life.
There is a 69 year old woman who has been my patient since 1998. When we first met, she was nearly wheelchair bound due to fibromyalgia. Through our work together, she has been able to resume her life to include traveling to see family and recreational dancing! She currently sees me once a year and is doing very well.
I began treating a 5 year old girl from out of state in April 2006, who had been diagnosed with autism. Her parents and I worked together very closely and intensely to try and make a difference in her life. Within 8 months, she was no longer diagnosable as autistic! We were thrilled with her progress. We still work together to address other health issues that she faces and to maintain the level of health that she has achieved.
There is a 55 year old man who I see frequently and who has been my patient since 2004. He came to me with a multitude of complex medical issues. To date, these are the issues that have resolved: heartburn; cancer; chronic constipation; swelling in his legs; hypothyroidism; low testosterone levels; depression; chronic sinusitis; chronic headaches; and anemia. He continues to cope with severe arthritis in his knees. We manage his considerable and constant pain through cortisol and pain medication. He is currently planning knee replacement surgery.
I treated a 30 year old woman with severe post-partum depression. Her symptoms completely vanished within a few days of beginning the treatment plan that I created for her at her first appointment.
There is a 66 year old retired dentist who lives out of state that came to see me for his first appointment nearly a year ago. At that time he was nearly disabled with tremors, chronic headaches, rapid weight loss, low testosterone levels, osteoporosis, cancer and chronic fatigue. He has been diligent about following the treatment plans I have worked up for him which include many supplements and some life style changes. He now plays 3 games of tennis, three times a week and says, “I feel 100% better – not like a little old man anymore!”
While some patients and conditions respond very quickly to treatment, others can take months and years to improve and resolve. It requires perseverance and a dedication to following treatment plans, as well as a willingness to change habits and life situations as needed to promote wellness. My dedication to my patients includes being willing to listen well, and fine tuning treatment plans to reflect changes in a patient’s needs. I look forward to continuing our partnership in promoting wellness in your life.
While I do consult with many of you on a regular basis, I would like to recommend that all patients schedule a check-in every 6 months to a year. This can be a short telephone consult in many cases. We would review your case, your supplement protocol and medications, any changes in your symptoms and follow up with any labs needed.
Thank you all for the honor you have given me by choosing me to be your health consultant. I enjoy serving you immensely.
